The Šiauliai Railway Museum is a corporate museum that collects, preserves, restores and exhibits museum items related to the railway history of the Šiauliai region. The museum was founded on 4 September 1971 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Šiauliai railway. The museum was founded on the initiative of Aron Petuchovski, then head of the Šiauliai railway station. Two exhibitions have been set up: an outdoor one and a museum-historical one. After reconstruction, the museum moved to the grounds of the railway infrastructure branch. The museum's exhibition is laid out in two halls. The first hall holds the permanent exhibition. It introduces the history of the Šiauliai railways from 1871, when the railway station was built and the first train arrived in Šiauliai. This is illustrated by surviving photographs, documents and various other exhibits. In the museum you can see photographs of what the railway station looked like before and after the Second World War. The main part of the hall displays the tools and instruments used by railway workers of various professions: track workers, electricians and signalling staff. Visitors learn about railway workers' uniforms from different periods, their details and awards. Moments from railway workers' leisure, cultural life and sport are also on display. The second hall presents today's railway infrastructure and the only working railway model in the Šiauliai region. The hall displays photographs telling of the employees' everyday work and the first heads of the branch, a souvenir collection, and the awards won by the branch's employees at work and in sport. In the exhibition space the exhibits change regularly, and exhibitions, book presentations and other events are held. The museum has about 6,000 exhibits, and its collections are constantly being added to with new items donated by branch employees and town residents. The outdoor exhibition began to be assembled in 2004 on the initiative of Algirdas Karužis, director of the "Šiaulių geležinkelių infrastruktūra" branch. The exhibition covers an area of 13 ha. The exhibition encourages visitors to be not just onlookers but active participants. Visitors are greeted by the narrow-gauge steam locomotive PT-4-153 and the broad-gauge steam locomotive L-0106, crawler tractors, various types of draisines, a narrow-gauge carriage and other machinery. Visitors are also interested in the section of track laid on metal sleepers, the points-switching mechanism, wooden telegraph and electricity poles, and many other exhibits.
