As the introduction of the euro approached, the idea was born of a monument to the Lithuanian currency – the Cents Room – which artists and representatives of non-governmental organisations set about bringing to life. On 29–30 August 2014, during the "Šiauliai Nights" events, and on 12–13 September, during the "Šiauliai Days" events, people of Šiauliai gathered carrying cents and litas and full of ideas about how that money could be used creatively. Everyone who brought a cent or litas coin of any denomination and joined the campaign was entered in a book. The decorated book has been left for future generations in the Cents Room – it was signed by about 2,500 people from Šiauliai and guests from other Lithuanian cities and from abroad: Latvia, Germany, Portugal, Poland, China and elsewhere. Gražina Lamanauskienė, director of the Šiauliai University Library, agreed to help bring the Cents Room idea to life, and a lecture room in the library was assigned for it. The whole library team and university students joined the project. Cents were also glued on by groups of kindergarten children with their teachers, National Defence Volunteers, schoolchildren, elderly people, representatives of NGOs, members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, members of the Šiauliai City Council and employees of Šiauliai City Municipality. People came from all over Lithuania to glue cents, and those who could not come sent cents by post. The walls and ceiling of the room are covered with cents, and there is a symbolic throne, above which hang a huge one-litas coin and a map of Lithuania. The entire area of the map is covered with white cents, settlements are marked with 10-, 20- and 50-cent coins, and the large cities with metal litas coins. Another exhibit in the Cents Room is a Cross of Vytis made from 10-litas silver coins. The Cents Room is listed in the Lithuanian Book of Records as the room decorated with the most coins – 157,130. The total value of the coins is 3,463 litas 69 cents (€1,003.15). The room was officially opened on 16 February 2015.
