The Photography Museum is the only specialised museum of the history, art and technology of photography in Lithuania. It is an important multifunctional photography centre that preserves and presents a significant collection of almost 150,000 exhibits and museum objects: Lithuanian visual heritage, photographic equipment, prints and documents. The museum, modernised in 2014, organises exhibitions of contemporary and historical Lithuanian and foreign photography, meetings with photographers and photography researchers, educational sessions and a wide range of other modern and innovative educational and leisure activities. Under a tripartite agreement between the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the Šiauliai "Aušra" Museum and Tatjana Luckienė-Aldag, the Vitas Luckus Photography Centre was established at the museum in 2014. It researches Lithuanian art photography of the second half of the 20th century and the work of one of its most conceptual representatives, Vitas Luckus, looks after the preservation of his archive and cares for, studies and shares the archives of other photographers of that period. The museum gallery hosts a constant succession of outstanding photography exhibitions, accompanied by events, tours and educational tasks. A lively space for creative experiments – an educational studio with a darkroom and a small exhibition hall – invites children, young people and adults to creative workshops, and also hosts exhibitions, lectures and film screenings. In the reading room named after the museum's founder A. Dilys, any visitor can browse the publications of a unique specialised photography library free of charge while enjoying a coffee and the museum's free Wi-Fi. The latest photography albums, magazines and other publications, as well as souvenirs, can be bought in the museum shop next door. A special chance to step inside a camera promises unforgettable impressions: visit the camera obscura on the museum's roof terrace, while the terrace's viewing scopes let you look at panoramas of old Šiauliai and compare them with the impressive views of the modern city from above. On holidays and in the evenings, terrace visitors are invited to concerts and other entertainment events. Every year the museum hosts the traditional Museum Night and Researchers' Night events and joins in the city festivals – Šiauliai Days and Šiauliai Nights – and free admission on the most important Lithuanian state holidays has become a tradition. The museum also invites you to explore its archives online. More than 20,000 photographic museum objects are published in national and international databases.
