To mark the centenary of the restoration of the Lithuanian state, the people of Duokiškis launched the campaign "Give 100 Hares" (Duok 100 kiškių). Lots of hares came running, driving and flying in – not only from the furthest corners of Lithuania but from Germany too – and settled in "Hare Street" (Kiškių ūlyčia). The first hare made its home at the edge of the forest, on a Soviet concrete boundary marker that once marked the start of the Duokiškis collective farm. From here it is still a couple of kilometres to the village, so the Hare greets and sees off everyone who visits Duokiškis.
