On the largest island in the lake, which from a bird's-eye view looks like the outline of Lithuania, the classicist palace of Salos Manor has stood for several centuries. From the 17th to the 19th century the estate belonged to descendants of the Italian Moriconi family, who had come to Lithuania with Bona Sforza; in 1855 it was bought by the Tyzenhaus family, under whom Salos became a cultural centre with a summer theatre. The manor was also a filming location for J. Krisiūnas's film "Širdys" ("Hearts"). Today the manor house is home to a culture and leisure residence.
