Dusetos, a small town in Zarasai district, is famous for its traditional horse races on frozen Lake Sartai. But that is not the only thing that makes the town special. Dusetos is also known for its very active cultural life. And the main axis of that life is the modern Dusetos Art Gallery Culture Centre. Exhibitions, artists' plein-air sessions and symposiums are held here all the time. The centre's hall hosts plays, films, concerts, evening gatherings, creative evenings and meetings. Amateur groups are active here, and information publications and art albums are published. Drop in at the Dusetos Art Gallery Culture Centre and you will always find something interesting – exhibitions of contemporary photography and art are on all the time. Well-known people of culture and the arts also come to Dusetos to perform. The centre's hall has hosted the virtuoso pianist Alexander Paley and the world-famous choir of the State Academic Capella of St Petersburg, and the gallery has shown paintings by Šarūnas and Nomeda Saukas, who work in Dusetos. There are plenty of artists in Dusetos, and not only during plein-airs or symposiums. Many painters and photographers really do live and work here. It all goes back to the strengthened art teaching introduced at the local school several decades ago. This is why this relatively small town has so many artists and has become a magnet for cultural life. It is no coincidence that on 6 July 1995 what was probably the first professional art gallery in a Lithuanian small town opened here. The gallery's main aim is to bring together painters and photographers born, living and working in the Dusetos area and to present their work through exhibitions not only in Dusetos but also in other Lithuanian cities and abroad. Since its founding in 1995 the gallery has become an important cultural centre not only for the Zarasai region but for all of Lithuania. Not surprisingly, creative ideas spill beyond the Culture Centre and enrich the town itself. In 2008 the creation of a sculpture park by Lake Sartai was initiated. New works are added to the park every year, and it now has more than 20 sculptures by different artists. An island of contemporary art surrounded by exceptional natural beauty, far from the big cities, is a great chance to see art and culture differently. It is also a wonderful opportunity for holidaymakers by the lakes of Aukštaitija, in the embrace of nature, to enjoy high-quality exhibitions and events from time to time.
