Skersabaliai Quarry

Skersabaliai Quarry is a very cosy and photogenic place. Many people are tempted to come here after seeing artistic photos of railway tracks that cross the quarry and disappear into the water. In reality the quarry looks just as impressive as in the photos. A big pile of wooden sleepers dumped next to the tracks still gives off a strong smell of machine oil and is reminiscent of a railway station. The surroundings are at their most beautiful from the top of the quarry – from there you can see the small lake that has formed here, the tracks snaking off into the distance, and the steep pine-framed slopes left behind after the sand was dug out and taken away. An interesting detail: film crews have also appreciated how photogenic Skersabaliai Quarry is – the film 'Ashes in the Snow' was shot here in 2016, and later the series 'Stranger Things'. So if you want to visit a beautiful but harder-to-find and harder-to-reach place, come to Skersabaliai Quarry.

Getting there

SkersabaliaiVilnius District MunicipalityDirections
Getting there by carThe quarry lies in a forest near the village of Skersabaliai, about thirty kilometres from Vilnius. These coordinates will help you find it: 54.851775, 25.567267. The quarry can be reached from the top. However, you may have to walk the last couple of kilometres or so through the forest, as driving in is difficult because of a potholed forest track full of soft sand.
