Arvydai (Bezdonys) Manor

Not rated yetBezdonys

Resembling a pink doll's house, Arvydai-Bezdonys Manor greets travellers from afar, waving its single charming turret. The eclectic palace, dominated by classicist elements and topped with a belvedere-type tower, stands quietly among the trees, perhaps remembering with longing a past that was far from dull. Grand Duke Jogaila is believed to have visited the manor in 1415. The first known owner of Arvydai Manor was Ulrich Hosius, castellan of Vilnius and supervisor of the royal building works of Sigismund the Old. He oversaw the construction of the Lower Castle and the great royal mills, led the building of a bridge over the Neris, and also laid Vilnius's first water supply system. The main manor house took on its present appearance after it passed into the hands of Samuel Goldstein, a merchant who came from Germany. In his time leather-processing and glue factories flourished, a watermill operated, and in 1902 a power station began operating on the manor grounds and electric lighting was installed in its buildings. On 26 September 1908 the manor witnessed the famous train robbery led by J. Piłsudski. An unprecedented sum of money – 2.7 million roubles – was seized. In the Soviet era the grand manor, which had seen many prominent people, became a dormitory of the Bezdonys collective farm with a cinema hall. Nobody repaired the building any more, and it gradually began to decay. Fortunately, in 2002 the manor was privatised and restored. Note, however, that to see the inside of the manor you must arrange it in advance with the owners.
