The Skališkiai cave is a large cave set into the bank of the Neris. It is a geological natural monument formed over thousands of years. Here the Neris had to cut its way through fairly hard rocks. Steep slopes formed from them along the edges of the valley, and in one place even a cave. Today it is about 3 metres high and 15 metres wide, reaching about 6 metres into the depth of the slope. Drops of water fall with a ringing splash from the walls and ceiling of the cave. The Skališkiai cave is also called the Holy Cave, because people have long believed that the water dripping in it and the spring nearby have miraculous powers – they heal sore eyes. The Skališkiai cave is vividly described in Count Konstanty Tyszkiewicz's book of travel impressions "Wilija i jej brzegi" ("The Neris and Its Banks"), published in 1871. Having visited the cave, the count wrote: "It was a truly unusual sight. Here every passer-by was amazed by a block of rock jutting boldly out of the steep hillside. This cave lures visitors not only with its curious appearance – it also draws them with the spell of holiness that the people of those parts attributed to it. The water dripping from it was said to have the power to cure eye diseases. If anyone moistened their sore eyes with it, they were healed at once. Since then people of all classes, on foot and in carriages, have come here in great numbers. I visited the Holy Cave. At its foot knelt a grey-haired old man in a linen shirt, untorn and clean. His hands were folded, his eyes raised up to the cross. Thus he prayed to heaven without words, for his lips, alas, did not move. He was speaking a moving prayer of the soul."

Getting there

LiucionysVilnius District MunicipalityDirections
Getting there by carYou cannot drive right up to it. You can leave the car in a small car park in the village of Skališkiai itself. From there it is best to walk to the rock, since the further you go the worse the road gets, and in an ordinary car the risk of getting stuck on the underside keeps growing. Unfortunately, there are no signs to the rock.
