The botanical garden – a showcase and educational research base – was started in 1961. Today it is a member of the prestigious international botanic gardens network BGCI and of the Association of Lithuanian Botanic Gardens (LUBSA). The garden covers 6.54 ha in total, and more than 4,600 plant species and cultivars are grown here. Seeds are exchanged with more than 250 botanical gardens around the world. There is a Phenological Garden that is part of the international IPG programme. The botanical garden regularly hosts events for the university, the city and the county, and its educational and outreach activities keep growing. The botanical garden can be visited on weekdays all year round, and from May to October on Saturdays too. It is a great place to get to know plants and the diversity of their species and cultivars, to have a picnic, to take a break in nature and to capture life's most important moments.
