Palanga Resort Museum

The idea of creating a museum of the Palanga area was born at the beginning of the last century, at meetings of like-minded people who had joined together in the "Society of Lovers of Palanga". A little later, when I. Končius and V. Ruokis published their book "Palangos kraštas" (The Palanga Region), the idea spread even further. There was ever louder and more frequent talk of the need for Palanga to have its own local museum. After the cultural protection law was approved in 1967 and local-lore activity picked up throughout the country, the Lithuanian SSR Society for the Protection of Monuments and Local Lore became active in Palanga, chaired by retired Lithuanian language teacher Emilija Adiklienė. Together with fellow local historians she organised various gatherings at which the most significant events connected with Palanga were recounted and the most prominent figures who had helped to care for the town were presented. One of the most important and longest-running tasks of the local-lore society was collecting exhibits for the future museum. Although Palanga's local historians kept knocking on officials' doors, they never managed to solve the main reason why the museum could not be founded. For a long time no suitable premises could be found. Because of this, the exhibits collected by the local historians were moved from one place to another, and for a while were even kept in cellars. Only in 1982 were the exhibits collected by 2,044 Palanga residents handed over to the then Lithuanian SSR Museum of History and Ethnography, which was preparing to set up a branch in Palanga. Unfortunately, on 7 June 1989 it was not a Palanga town museum of ethnography and history that opened, but the Jonas Šliūpas Memorial Museum. So Palanga was once again left without its own town museum and, one might say, lost the exhibits that local historians had been collecting for almost 20 years. And although almost a whole century has passed since the vision of a Palanga local museum first appeared, Palanga can be glad that after a long search for a home, it was decided to house the museum in the Anapilis villa, a building of historical importance to the resort. In 2013 the Palanga Town Municipal Council approved the founding of the Palanga Resort Museum and its regulations. At the beginning of 2014 museum staff began work. The restored Anapilis villa opened to visitors in August 2016, and the museum's first exhibition opened in September 2016.
