Church of St Catherine

Not rated yetVilnius

Rebuilt only after Lithuania regained independence, in 1994, and restored in 2006, the church has become a multicultural centre bringing together art, theatre, poetry and, of course, music. After all, where is there better acoustics than in churches? No wonder there is a widespread view that nowhere else in Lithuania does a choir sound so beautiful. And it is not only choirs that sound here, but classical, jazz, popular and vocal music too. Admire this late Baroque church, almost lost, with its ornate Rococo decorations. During and after the Second World War the church and the neighbouring convent were badly damaged, and many valuable works of art disappeared. In Soviet times the church was used as a warehouse, and the convent premises housed offices and flats. The surviving paintings are kept at the Lithuanian Art Museum.
