The Church of the Holy Spirit, or simply the Dominican Church, looks little different from others on the outside. But inside… that is a different story altogether! A wealth of portal cartouches with coats of arms, walls adorned with frescoes, sixteen altars, a fantastic organ – and before you is one of the most ornate churches of the High and Late Baroque in Vilnius. Look around as you enter: this Rococo interior is considered one of the most valuable of all Lithuanian churches. If you come during Mass, listen: to this day Mass here is celebrated only in Polish – this is the home of the Polish Catholic community. Go down into the crypts and you would find surviving human remains – victims of wars or epidemics. An inspection found as many as 23 mummies: women, men and children. And if you could step back to 1993, you would meet Pope John Paul II here – he visited this church during his visit to Lithuania.
