The Šaltiškiai clay quarries lie in Early Triassic clay beds. In the Early Triassic, 250 million years ago, a desert climate prevailed here, and alluvial sediments accumulated on the plains that were silting up at the time. Over millions of years, as the minerals biotite and hornblende broke down, they released iron, which gave these layers their red colour. According to scientists, the views resemble panoramas sent back by Mars space probes. *Visits to this site must be arranged by phone at the number given. *Visiting the site on your own is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN!
