Limestone began to be quarried in Menčiai as early as 1932 for lime production and the sugar industry. Today part of the excavated quarry is flooded, and artificial ponds lap against the surviving limestone outcrops. The shores of the flooded ponds are densely overgrown with thickets of tall grasses and shrubs. In places white melilot forms thickets, and here and there purple-flowered vetch and other plants can be found. Visitors to the quarry are stunned by a view reminiscent of America's pinkish Grand Canyon.
