A trail just over a kilometre long runs all the way around tiny Lake Ilgis, which shimmers in Džiuginėnai Forest. The lake's dark waters vividly reflect the surrounding trees and make a striking contrast with the lush greenery around it. Lake Ilgis is so small it's almost strange. It feels odd to see the far shore without any effort and to watch people swimming on the other side. Ilgis was certainly bigger once. That becomes clear when you learn that a wide strip of its western shore has turned into a bog – more precisely, a raised bog that turns into a flooded black alder wood, a fen. You cross the boggy part on a boardwalk. The unique nature of the bog amazes you with its beauty every time you see it. Walkers on the Ilgis trail can do more than enjoy the varied nature. Part of the nature trail is a sensory (barefoot) path, made for walking barefoot across bog, loose surfaces, stones and logs. The cosy Lake Ilgis trail is worth a visit when you're in the mood for gentle beauty and a short, slow walk.
