Klaipėda Old Town

Not rated yetKlaipėda

Klaipėda Old Town is the oldest part of the port city, on the right bank of the Danė near the Curonian Lagoon. It is protected as a cultural heritage area whose urban and architectural values span the 13th to the 20th century. The Old Town grew up next to Klaipėda (Memel) Castle, founded in 1252, so its street grid and half-timbered buildings recall the traditions of towns in Lithuania Minor and Prussia. Narrow cobbled streets, former merchants' warehouses, cosy courtyards, Theatre Square and the Danė embankments are full of playful sculptures, galleries, cafés and events, and in summer the Sea Festival fills the streets.
