Klaipėda Clock Museum

Not rated yetKlaipėda

In 1979 the Lithuanian Art Museum established a Clock Department, and in 1984 a branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum – the Klaipėda Clock Museum, one of the most unique museums in Eastern Europe – opened in a restored 19th-century building, with a Sundial Park laid out in the museum courtyard. The Clock Museum's exhibition has two parts. The first floor reveals the principles of measuring time and the development of clock design from antiquity to the present day. Visitors are introduced to calendars and to ancient sundials, water clocks, fire clocks, hourglasses, mechanical clocks and others. The second floor shows how the forms and design of mechanical clocks changed from the Renaissance to Art Nouveau (16th–20th centuries). The exhibition contains more than 1,700 original and rare clocks and reconstructions. The clock exhibition is complemented by furniture of the corresponding styles, interior details and engravings. The museum has long-term exhibitions: "History of the Clock Museum Building" – photographs of the building's interior from 1914–1924; "Baroque – the Magical Technique of A.-C. Boulle" – luxurious 18th–19th-century Baroque and Neo-Baroque clocks and furniture veneered with sea turtle shell. The Clock Museum organises equinox and solstice festivals called "The Sun's Path in a Circle" and events for "Museum Night". Various events for the people of Klaipėda and visitors to the city take place in the museum and its courtyard.
