The Kernavė archaeological complex consists of a hillfort (Aukuro Kalnas – Altar Hill), two outer fortifications (Mindaugo Sostas – Mindaugas' Throne, and Lizdeikos Kalnas – Lizdeika's Hill), an outer bailey (Pilies Kalnas – Castle Hill), a settlement at the foot of the hills and 3 burial grounds. As archaeological research has been carried out at the complex continuously since 1979, Kernavė is one of the best-studied prehistoric and medieval settlements in Lithuania. In 1988 the Kernavė Archaeological and Historical Museum-Reserve was established to protect the complex, and in 2004 Kernavė was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
