Karpiškės Mini Zoo

Not rated yetKarpiškės

Bronius Jurgelevičius spent much of his life as a hunter – he shot 22 wolves (more than any other hunter in Lithuania) and pulled 40 wolf cubs out of their dens – before giving it up. He not only no longer hunts but has become a passionate animal carer and protector of wild animals. He set himself the goal of breeding as many wolves as he had killed. In the village of Karpiškės, next to his homestead, he set up a mini zoo. It amazes visitors with the harmony between civilisation and wild nature: a stork walks around the yard alongside colourful hens, a peacock's feathers dazzle the eye, wolves circle in their enclosure, wild boars bathe in mud, and there is also a North American raccoon, a young roe deer, a fox... The little zoo in the Varėna district is looked after by the owner of the homestead himself, B. Jurgelevičius. For his care of animals he was nominated for the title of Lithuanian Luminary. The private mini zoo in Karpiškės is often visited by school excursions and by tourists from Lithuania and abroad. Visitors are charmed by the owner's love and devotion to the animals.
