A dune of bright yellow sand shaped by dropped aerial bombs. The Rūdninkai dune is narrow but long – standing at one end, you cannot see the other. In Soviet times a Soviet army training ground was set up in the Rūdninkai Forest, where, it turns out, military pilots trained. At the range, the military would line up columns of tanks and vehicles, and warplanes would bomb them. Airfields were simulated here, and decommissioned aircraft stood at the range – the military aviators bombed those too. It is said that it is precisely thanks to the bombs dropped here that we can now admire the Rūdninkai dune. It seems the explosions prevented nature from completely covering the sandy surface with moss, heather and grass. Walking around the dune, and especially in the forest, you will certainly see here and there fairly deep, regular pits, as if blasted out. Today the peace of this large and eye-pleasing dune is disturbed only by off-road fans who come here to tear around on motorbikes or quad bikes.
