A relaxing holiday in Palanga is unthinkable not only without the sea but also without a stroll through one of the most beautiful parks in Northern Europe – Birutė Park. Known as the pearl of Palanga, this part of the resort is improved every year to make it even more attractive to holidaymakers. Birutė Park was laid out on the site of the former sacred Birutė Forest and Birutė Hill. The landscape design of the park was created at the end of the 19th century for the Counts Tyszkiewicz by the famous French architect Édouard François André. Skilfully designed, the park offers a great variety of views and moods, with masterfully laid-out paths and flower beds in its open spaces. Before that, this land of the Tyszkiewicz estate was a swamp overgrown with tussocks. On the counts' orders, ponds were dug here and the soil was used to build the embankment for the future manor. In 1897 a Neo-Renaissance palace was built on it, which now houses the famous Amber Museum. Birutė Park is a great place for quiet, relaxing family time, so parents with little ones, young people and older Palanga residents and visitors all enjoy spending their free time here. Traditionally, three times a week – every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in summer at 18:30 – brass music fans gather at the park's rotunda, where Palanga's professional orchestra gives free concerts surrounded by nature for locals and visitors. The chamber music concert series “Night Serenades” is another traditional event that has been bringing renown to Palanga, Birutė Park and the Amber Museum for more than a decade. In September the park blooms with new colours when it hosts the “Birutė Park Day” festival – an event for those who love quiet, relaxing time in nature.
