Antanas Vienuolis-Žukauskas Memorial House-Museum
Anykščiai is an exceptional Lithuanian town where, in both summer and winter, you can visit a wealth of places – from entertainment and leisure spots to educational ones. Anykščiai has the first memorial museum in Lithuania, founded in 1927 thanks to the efforts of the writer Antanas Žukauskas-Vienuolis in the granary of the poet Antanas Baranauskas. The museum was later named the A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Žukauskas Memorial Museum. It is important to the Anykščiai region and to all of Lithuania not only because it constantly recalls the region's prominent figures, but also because exhibits of cultural, historical and educational significance are collected, preserved and promoted here. After spending about twenty years abroad, the writer A. Vienuolis returned to his homeland and settled here. On the plot he had inherited he built a house, where he spent his days until his death. The museum's memorial library now holds more than 1,300 books. Visitors can also see A. Vienuolis's study, his wife's room and a small kitchen where the furniture and objects once used have survived. The writer's grave is in the garden.
