Alančiai Manor

Not rated yetAlantės

The ruins of Alančiai Manor are among the most impressive in all of Lithuania – staggering in their size and their huge park of trees. The site is unsafe. It is private property, so visits must be arranged with the owner. The manor ruins are about 1 km from the Vilnius–Panevėžys motorway. The history of Alančiai Manor goes back to the 16th century. In 1569 the lands of Alančiai and the surrounding villages were granted under contract to Levonija, the chamberlain of Vilnius, who came from the ducal Žilinskas family. In 1649 Gabriel Širvinskas bought the Kulngiškiai and Šilai lands. His son Andrzej Širvinskas, a judge of the Ukmergė land, acquired Raguva in 1681 and, in 1696, the Alančiai lands from the Voivode of Trakai, Aleksander Ogiński. After A. Širvinskas died, his widow Petronėlė Talatovaitė and her sons handed Alančiai over to creditors in 1716 to settle debts, and in 1718 it was bought by Mykolas Frackevičius. In 1777 Alančiai was held by the Voivode of Smolensk, Jonas Franskevičius, who came from the Piłsudski family. In 1795 the owners of Alančiai were Adomas and Ieva Staševičius. From 1876 the manor belonged to Antanas Rudamina of the Rudamina family of Dusetiškiai. In the 19th century Alančiai Manor passed to one representative of this family, Antanas Rudamina, grandson of Petras Rudamina, a royal rotmistrz and Marshal of the Vilnius Tribunal. After his death in 1884 his brother Ričardas looked after the estate for some time, as the daughters were still minors. In 1940, when the manor was nationalised, it was held by the heirs of Magdalena Rudaminaitė. At that time the estate covered 80 ha. It is said that in the last years of the manor's 'life' there was a shelter for disabled girls here, whose residents made openwork lace; it is said the lace was sent as far as Italy, though some locals consider the story of the shelter an exaggerated legend.
