White Rose Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge
The highest pedestrian and cycle bridge in Lithuania was built in 2015 on the surviving piers of a former railway bridge and is listed in the Lithuanian Book of Records. It is 38.1 m high and 260 m long. The project was designed by V. Karieta. In the second half of the 19th century, as the western borders of the Russian Empire (to which Lithuania then belonged) were being reinforced, a military railway was laid to Alytus, a third-class fortress. In 1897–1899 a bridge of innovative cantilever construction (designed by N. Belelubsky) was built here; it was 33 m high and 240.5 m long. Its deck carried both trains and carts. During the First World War, in 1915, the retreating Tsarist army blew up the bridge. The Germans, who occupied Alytus, built a temporary wooden military railway bridge in its place. It was 35 m high and 294 m long. The bridge served until 1926 and was later dismantled. Construction of the new three-span strutted bridge began in August 2013 and was completed in October 2015. The bridge was officially opened on 4 June 2016.
