Alytus City Garden

Not rated yetAlytus

Famous for its rose gardens, the City Garden in the very centre of Alytus was completed in 1931. The legendary fountain with a small pool, built in 1939 to a design by the city engineer V. Trečiokas, survives to this day; goldfish once swam in it and lilies bloomed. The fountain was placed at the centre of the park so that it would be like a little sun, with all the paths radiating from it like rays of sunshine. The squirrels romping in the garden bring a smile to many a face. The garden has 55 species of trees and shrubs and three named oaks: one planted in 1930 in honour of President A. Smetona, one in 1933 for the unity of the Baltic states, and one in 1939 in honour of K. Petrauskas. A fourth oak, dedicated to the centenary of Lithuania, was planted in 2018. Lovers have always liked to arrange dates in the City Garden, most often by the fountain. The wooden park benches were often covered with love poems. Many still remember feelings shattered to pieces in the City Garden's lovers' corner or at the dance floor (known as the "plaščiatka"). Next to the City Garden there is a square with the "Angel of Freedom" monument in its centre.
