A hill above Lake Žalias (Šiekštis), next to the Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre. On the hill stands a 25 m observation tower with wonderful panoramic views. A wooden ski jump once stood on this spot – and it was taller than this tower! The history of sport in Ignalina goes back to 1951. Nature itself created terrain here that is ideal for skiing. In 1958 Bronius Šimkūnas, a local from Ignalina, took the initiative to set up a sports base and build a ski jump in Ignalina. After searching for a beautiful, hilly spot, the site chosen for the base was among steep hills by Lake Žalias (Šiekštis). In 1963 a 50 m wooden ski jump, the highest in Lithuania, was built on Vilkakalnis hill. Jumps from it reached up to 60 metres. The famous ski jump drew many competitors and spectators. In 1965 Ignalina hosted the first Lithuanian ski jumping championship.
