Here you can see an exhibition of an ancient barrow and a Stone Age dwelling. The exhibition is an exact copy of one of the graves of a barrow cemetery found in Palūšė. Although it is not real, seeing a life-size human skeleton lying there with its grave goods, no different from a real one, sends shivers down your spine. Ancient graves known as barrows are plentiful throughout Aukštaitija National Park, because since ancient times people have been drawn to this land of lakes and built their settlements here. The exhibition in Palūšė shows an ancient Baltic barrow burial. But in this region and the surrounding areas, traces of human activity are found from far older times too. Next to the grave exhibition there is also a Stone Age dwelling. It was built on the basis of archaeological finds from the Kretuonas area in Švenčionys District. The settlements of the 3rd–2nd millennia BC found there are considered the oldest in Lithuania. Inside the dwelling you can see how our ancestors lived at that time – where the fire burned and how the bed was arranged. You can also see the main tools, vessels and other household items people used at the time. This chance to travel back many centuries and see the daily life of ancient people up close will leave a truly unforgettable impression. And if after this visit to Palūšė you become interested in Lithuania's ancient history and want to see more related sites, you can also visit real ancient Baltic barrow cemeteries. They are in the forest about half a kilometre to the east and north-east. Walking through the forest dotted with countless mounds, you can feel the breath of the very oldest times of Lithuanian history and touch it. We look forward to seeing you in Palūšė! You can visit the barrow exhibition all year round, on your own or with a guided tour.
