The Vieškūnai hillfort in Palemonas, also called Amaliai hillfort or Šuneliškės Hill, was discovered only in 1992. Most likely because it was unknown for so long, it is one of the best-preserved hillforts in Lithuania. It dates from the second half of the 14th century. A small wooden fort once stood on the hillfort – it was built to cover Kaunas Castle from the south-east, as part of a defensive ring. It was attacked at least once. Sadly, the fort's name is unknown. Next to it, at the foot of the hillfort, on the site of an earlier Stone Age settlement, a new settlement was founded, which lasted as long as the hillfort. The settlement was studied more extensively in the 2000s. In the 14th-century cultural layer, pottery, animal bones, clay plaster, bronze jewellery and remains of iron weapons were found. One of the legends about this hillfort says that a landowner's daughter took her own life here. People believe the place is haunted and that dogs can be heard barking. Hence the name Šuneliškės (from "šuo", dog). In 1998–2002 the hillfort, which had been eroded by the Kaunas Reservoir (it is said that water and soil erosion destroyed some fifty hillforts in this area altogether), was restored. The eroded slope was rebuilt and reinforced, some of the trees were cut down, and steps, benches and swings were installed; at the foot of the hill a monument was erected to the Žiegždriai, Rumšiškės, Dovainonys, Guogai and Pelekonys hillforts washed away by the Kaunas Reservoir. An altar was also built here. In every season the hillfort offers a superb view of the reservoir, the sandy slopes and the pearl of Lithuanian Baroque – Pažaislis Monastery. In this secluded spot you can relax and listen to the birdsong – the Nightingale Valley, a unique corner created by nature, is right nearby. In 1937 the poet Salomėja Nėris settled next to the valley, and today you can visit her memorial museum. On the other side of the Nightingale Valley is the Kaunas Yacht Club. From here you can also see the remains of the state-protected Palemonas Fort of the Kaunas Fortress, surrounded by a chain of 29 defensive fortifications. By the way, right nearby you will find the marked 1 km historical and ecological trail "Pažinimas".
