This is a unique piece of technical heritage and a historical treasure. The hand-turned metal bridge over the castle canal was built in 1855. It is the only mechanism of this type in Lithuania. It is made of riveted iron and decorated with chains, which is why until the Second World War it was called the "Chain Bridge" (German: Kettenbrücke). The bridge's turning mechanism is manual: two people swing the bridge round so that boats can sail along the channel beneath it into the former moat of Klaipėda Castle. The bridge is marked with the maritime heritage sign, which is used for objects connected with maritime heritage – buildings and sites of former buildings, quays, paths, ships and more. In 2010 the 2.4-metre bronze sculpture "The Black Ghost" was ceremonially unveiled next to it; it was inspired by the legend "The Black Man of Memel", recorded by Caspar Hennenberger at the end of the 16th century.
