„The Black Ghost“ (Juodasis vaiduoklis) is a 2.4 m bronze sculpture that seems to be climbing out of the waters of the Danė. It brings to life an old Klaipėda legend: on the evening of 19 February 1595 the castle guard Hans von der Heide saw a man dressed in black who asked whether the town was short of food. On hearing that supplies were plentiful, the ghost foretold that grain and firewood would soon run out and vanished, and the castle fortifications shook violently. The sculpture was created in 2010 by sculptors Svajūnas Jurkus and Sergejus Plotnikovas with architects Vladas Balsys and Vaidotas Dapkevičius; it was initiated by the company „Pamario restauratorius“ and Klaipėda City Municipality. It is one of the most mysterious and best-known sculptures in the port city.
