A beautiful lake, a raised bog, a fen, Samogitian meadows full of hills and hillocks, flowers and cows, a hillfort, a spring wrapped in myths, and a stone causeway: this is the rich programme awaiting you if you decide to take on the Paršežeris walking nature trail. Some 15 kilometres of variety. As the trail is a loop, it really makes no difference which direction you start in: you'll come back to the same campsite either way. Lake Paršežeris is unique in that it is bordered by the Ežero fen of about 150 hectares to the south and the Požerė raised bog of about 90 hectares to the north. Both have very distinctive nature, and the trail is laid out so that we can discover that beauty and see it with our own eyes. A wooden boardwalk and several small bridges have been built across the wetlands and other damp spots surrounding the lake. Part of the trail leaves the lakeshore and sets off into the nearby meadows, pastures, country roads and lanes. It leads to a myth-shrouded spring called the "Giants' Bath" (a very mysterious little corner of nature), points to the Sietuva stone causeway, the Paršpilis hillfort and the nearby Parškalnis, an ancient settlement, and also to a burial mound in the village of Reškėtai, where insurgents of 1863 are buried. Walking through the meadows, next to the direction arrows you'll see warning signs saying you may meet cattle along the way. Samogitia is the region where the most cattle are raised. In September 2026 the State Service for Protected Areas announced that the trail was temporarily closed, so check its condition with the Varniai Regional Park directorate before you go.
