Monument to Romain Gary

5.02 reviewsVilnius

The writer Romain Gary fell in love and was not afraid to prove his feelings. Only he chose, to put it mildly, an unexpected way to do it – out of love, he ate his own rubber galosh! As if such determination were not reason enough for a sculpture, this young man from Lithuania became the only person to win the prestigious Prix Goncourt twice. The award can be given to one person only once. How did that happen? It was all down to that determination. The famous writer did not want to be bound to writing in the same style, so he used the name Émile Ajar, a supposed nephew. Although some suspected a trick, most believed the lie. You can bet that the writer, with his great sense of humour, had a good laugh at the talk of the completely different styles of the two "writers". He would probably also have laughed at the sculpture of himself that sprang up in front of his childhood home, holding none other than a rubber galosh.
