Decorated with several thousand keys, this tree gives energy to passers-by. Newly-weds seeking the key to family happiness also leave their mark by its trunk. Looking at the tree, it would be hard to believe that it has survived several fires and damage by ill-meaning people. The ash had already been marked for felling, but the Panevėžys ceramicist Algirdas Jonušis decided not to let that happen. The artist knew the tree's history and saw that it was truly unique, so he decided to turn it into a city attraction. Hanging keys on this tree began for a reason: excavations next to the ash uncovered a box with seventy keys, and all of them were hung on it. According to the ceramicist, in the old days keys had more than a practical meaning for people. So-called symbolic keys are still found today. They were made not to lock doors but were hung in a visible place in the home as a kind of family protection, a protective amulet. The key tree now especially attracts newly-weds, who no longer hang padlocks on bridges but come to Birutės Street to hang keys, believing it will bring them luck. But this unique tree also draws those seeking other kinds of luck.
