Kavarskas St John the Baptist Spring
Wrapped in legends and said to hold miraculous healing powers, St John's Spring is a source of fresh, pure water that breaks out at the top of a hill, a full 134 metres from the level of the Šventoji riverbed. On feast days St John's Spring and its wonderful surroundings become a gathering place for the people of Kavarskas. It is probably the only spring in Lithuania (or perhaps beyond) whose cool water (not only indescribably pure but, it is believed, holy too!) fills a specially built concrete pool more than 3 m deep right beside it! The spring runs its course a full 134 metres from the level of the Šventoji up to the top of the hill. This not only fired our ancestors' imagination but remains a great mystery today. Incidentally, Lithuania still keeps the tradition of decorating springs with flower wreaths during the summer festivals (Joninės, Rasos, Kupolės). The spring is in the small town of Kavarskas. An exceptional place, exceptional sensations. It is claimed that bathing in this water will make you at least 5 years younger. Many stop to take some of this magical water home – they say the best coffee is made only with it. By the way, even on a hot midsummer day the water in the pool stays at about 6–8 degrees Celsius. This is confirmed by the countless coins on the bottom of the pool – children don't dare dive in to collect them.
