Gate of Dawn

Not rated yetVilnius

The Gate of Dawn is the road to the heart of the city, which is why it was the most attacked place in Vilnius. In 1799 the Russian Empire demolished the defensive wall but left the Gate of Dawn untouched. It is thought they were afraid of the holy image. It is one of the few images of the Virgin Mary without the Child. It has been venerated as miraculous for hundreds of years, although at first it was just an ordinary painting hanging in a niche in the wall, protected from rain and snow only by shutters. So what happened that even huge armies did not dare to destroy the chapel? It is said that, by the grace of the Virgin Mary, a child who had fallen from the second floor miraculously came back to life. Another child was visited by angels in the chapel and promised a great future. When the prophecy came true, the grown-up child kept sending gifts – one of them, a chain, still hangs in the chapel. Sinners met the opposite fate. For example, a Russian soldier who mocked the image and intended to rob it was thrown from the image of Mary by an invisible force so hard that only a stain was left of him. No wonder believers still gather here today. Admittedly, it is much easier to do so now. In the past the chapel could only be entered from the monastery garden, and lay people, especially women, were not allowed in. But can you stop people praying for a miracle? That is why the chapel is now arranged so that the miracle can be seen from the street as well.
