It was once a real local landmark, as shown by its several local names (Pilalės kalnas, Pelutės kalnas, Muškalnis) and nearly twenty different stories and legends about it. One of them says there was a hole in the hill. The shepherds thought there was treasure inside, so they lowered the smallest of them on a rope to check. At the end of the cave the shepherd boy came to a gate, behind which he met an old man. The old man led the child inside, treated him to the most delicious food and showed him a magnificent palace gleaming with gold – which, it turned out, was where the boy had ended up. Then he let the boy out of the cave, telling him not to tell anyone what he had seen. His masters were astonished to see the boy alive, as three days had passed since he disappeared. When they began asking where he had been, he could not withstand their questioning, let slip what he had seen and immediately lost the power of speech. That is the story, recorded before the Second World War. The hillfort, built on the spur of an upland, has a long, narrow top (110 × 20–25 m) with ramparts 0.5–2.5 m high at each end. The slopes are steep, about 9 m high. At the end of 1944 the hillfort was incorporated into the defence system of Klaipėda: a trench was dug at the eastern edge of its top, concrete machine-gun positions – the so-called Koch bunkers – were built into the ramparts, and an anti-tank ditch with an embankment runs up to the slopes.
