Birštonas Sacral Museum

The Sacral Museum, housed in the former rectory, welcomes more pilgrims and individual visitors every year. Whether because of its fine collection of art treasures or the warm attention given to every visitor, those who have been here have called their visit "true rest for the soul and refreshment for the mind". The legendary Lithuanian poet Justinas Marcinkevičius declared that this museum is dedicated to love. From the outside the museum building looks like a modest wooden house with ethnographic decorations, but inside there are well-arranged, valuable historical, religious and art exhibitions. From 1956, Blessed Archbishop Teofilius Matulionis lived here for two years. Two rooms are dedicated to his memory, displaying not only the bishop's attributes but also objects recalling his sixteen years of imprisonment in Soviet prisons. The unbreakable martyr called his rosary made of bread and his handwritten prayer book "rays of light". After seeing them, you can make your own bread rosary during an educational programme while listening to stories about the priest whom even the prison guards called a true human being and whom KGB agents predicted might be declared a saint. A display of colourful wooden figurines carved by folk artists attracts special attention. Most of them were made in Samogitia in the 19th century. Art historians see pagan elements in them, and UNESCO has inscribed Lithuanian cross-crafting and its symbolism on its intangible cultural heritage list. The museum also displays church paintings of very high artistic quality and ritual vessels from the collections of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art. Pilgrims linger in the hall devoted to the relics of saints. The museum's second floor hosts events and changing art exhibitions. We recommend setting aside at least an hour for your visit. Educational programmes on martyrdom, gingerbread baking, candle making or folk art must be booked in advance.
