Angel of Užupis Sculpture
The story of the "Angel of Užupis" is inseparable from the history of the district itself. For a long time Užupis was a gloomy and far from prestigious place. But when change began, newcomers started moving in and house façades began to be renovated. The enterprising newcomers were brought together by a prominent member of the community – the painter, cartoonist, director and animator Zenonas Šteinys. So when Z. Šteinys died, the community decided to create a monument to him. Among the various options considered, Romas Vilčiauskas, a resident of Užupis, proposed the idea of an angel. However, R. Vilčiauskas did not manage to make the angel by the agreed date. At the unveiling ceremony he presented an egg from which the Angel of Užupis would supposedly soon hatch. The "Angel of Užupis" sculpture was finally erected in 2002, marking the fifth anniversary of the independence of Užupis.
