The city of Vilnius has an artists' district called Užupis. And it is not just a place where interesting people have gathered. It is a whole republic. The Republic of Užupis has its own president, prime minister, ministers, ambassadors, army and holidays. It even has its own constitution. On one of the main streets of Užupis – Paupio Street – the main articles of the Constitution hang right on a wall. Among them are statements such as "Everyone has the right to understand nothing", "Everyone has the right to celebrate or not to celebrate their birthday", "Do not conquer" and so on. The text speaks to you and urges you to understand, to listen, and to be more tolerant and forgiving not only of others but of yourself too. This idea is supported by the flag of the Republic of Užupis shown to the right of the Constitution – a hand with a hole in the palm. The palm symbolises openness and tolerance, and the hole means that in Užupis you can live, love and work, but you cannot possess. The Constitution has been translated into more than 50 languages. The number of translations keeps growing, so the ideas of Užupis are reaching more and more people. Užupis is a small district, but it has lots of interesting places.
