The Viešvilė river is 22 km long, and most of it flows through the Viešvilė Strict Nature Reserve. The river was once famous for its abundant sea trout and was considered a true salmon river. But ponds with dams made their spawning grounds inaccessible. To restore the fish population, this fish pass was built; it blends well into the surrounding nature and lets fish get past the obstacle as they migrate upstream. The fish pass consists of low steps with a gentle current, so that fish can cover the distance by leaping.
