Vėžaičiai Manor Estate

Not rated yetVėžaičiai

Vėžaičiai has been mentioned in historical sources since the 16th century. Two tributaries of the Minija, the Skinija and Gerdauja streams, flow through the town. The history of Vėžaičiai is inseparable from the manor, which also shaped the growth of the whole settlement. Vėžaičiai Manor has been mentioned in historical sources since the beginning of the 18th century. The historicist buildings of the Vėžaičiai Manor ensemble survive from the late 19th century. From 1774 the manor was held by four generations of the counts von Wolmer. It is a manor estate of architectural, historical and urban value. The complex includes a park, the gamekeeper's house, two gates, a stable, a guardhouse, a distillery, a cowshed, a granary, a house and a small chapel. The park and the manor buildings were reconstructed in the mid-20th century. The entrance to Vėžaičiai Manor is flanked by the southern, so-called "white", and the northern, so-called "red" gates. A dense linden avenue once led through the park to the manor site. The park has a mixed layout and lies in the western part of the settlement, by the Skinija stream. The ensemble of former manor buildings stands on the left slope of the stream. The main park alley winds gently along the Skinija on the low terrace. In the meadow on the upper terrace, besides self-sown lindens, birches and rowans, grow blue spruces, Douglas firs, northern white cedars, red oaks and various ornamental shrubs. The tree stands on the slope dividing the terraces and in the Skinija valley consist mainly of self-sown maples and ashes, along with oaks, lindens, European white elms and horse chestnuts. In 1986 the park was declared a natural monument of local importance. Of the buildings that make up the manor ensemble, the former stables are the best preserved today. The stables were restored in the 1980s and given a new cultural life. They were designed by a team of architect A. Meškauskienė and structural engineer P. Ramonas. The Vėžaičiai Manor stable has neo-Gothic features. It was built in 1908 and has a symmetrical volume with an accentuated corner section. Today it houses the Vėžaičiai Culture Centre, with art exhibitions, contemporary dance clubs, ethnographic ensemble concerts and dance evenings. The former home of the manor's gamekeeper has also been restored (it is private property). The present park is mostly used for various cultural events. In the future the aim is to restore the former manor buildings and adapt the complex for educational and eco-tourism. The town of Vėžaičiai is inseparable from the annual St Anne's Day festival. These church fair celebrations have been held in Vėžaičiai since 1914. Near Vėžaičiai is the village of Pažvelsys, the birthplace of the Lithuanian poet and playwright Butkų Juzė, marked by a roofed pole.
