In Šilutė District, on Rusnė Island, famous for its uniqueness, the Uostadvaris homestead with its lighthouse, dating back to the 19th century, rises proudly on the left bank of the Atmata river. Although this landmark in the Nemunas Delta is very popular with visitors, getting here is not so easy, as the river mouth is constantly silted up with sand by the winds. In the second half of the 19th century, at a point important for shipping, opposite the mouth of the Minija, the Uostadvaris lighthouse was built – once a very important guide for passing water travellers. Although the lighthouse has survived perfectly to this day, its last lamp went out long ago. Today it is a monument of technical history that is no longer used for navigation but serves excellently as a viewpoint over the Rusnė and Minija surroundings, delighting the village's families and the crowds of visitors who flock here in summer. The Uostadvaris obelisk rising into the sky is truly impressive. It is an 18 m tall lighthouse of regular octagonal shape; the edges of its red-brick walls are decorated with green glazed bricks, and 48 spiral concrete steps lead to the lantern room. From there you reach the viewing platform. Climbing up to the former lookout, you get a superb panorama of the landscape, and if you look carefully you can even see the edge of the white Nida dunes. The lighthouse is connected to the keeper's house, built on a high foundation, whose architecture is typical of the houses around Rusnė. The house itself is decorated with a plaster band, decorative niches running around the building and other ornaments typical of the second half of the 19th century. Although the Uostadvaris lantern no longer cuts through the night sky of the lagoon area, it is really worth seeing up close and climbing to the viewing platform to enjoy the landscape that opens up. Believe us, it is not for nothing that the Uostadvaris lighthouse was entered in the Register of Cultural Property in 1996.
