Tulkiaragė Nature Trail is a place that reveals the bond between people and nature and why that relationship matters. Created on the initiative of the Baltic Environmental Forum, the trail tells the unusual story of an area shaped by water and people, and introduces the birds that fill it with their calls. Right from the time the Tulkiaragė area formed, people settled here: they built dykes, set up a polder, mowed and looked after the fertile meadows. Once changed in this way, the area's ecosystem became dependent on human activity, which keeps the whole web of life going here and allows a great many species of animals and plants to thrive. The Tulkiaragė water pumping station, which hasn't worked for several decades, has become a real regional attraction. The building, painted in street-art style, catches the eye, and the birdwatching tower and living nature school set up on it invite you to enjoy the surroundings from higher up and closer in. One wall of the station shows an aquatic warbler – a globally threatened bird species that still breeds in the meadows of the Nemunas Delta. Another wall shows a farmer surrounded by birds, and on the south side of the building hang original, unusually shaped nest boxes for birds, bats and insects. Thanks to art, not only the station but also the other structures along the more than one-kilometre nature trail running along the dyke have come to life. Along the dyke stand unusual information boards – some rotate, some have moving parts or exhibits. By blowing into a glass bottle, visitors can "talk" to the Eurasian bittern, examine a tree gnawed by beavers, try on the boards that peat-diggers used in the bogs, and take in the landscape of Lake Krokų Lanka. A special view opens up not only from the observation tower but also from the Dreamers' Bench on unusually tall legs, where you can rest, admire the stunning natural scenery and listen to a live bird concert.
