In Vilnius Old Town, on B. Radvilaitės Street, Lithuania's first Toy Museum awaits everyone – children and adults alike. The museum is divided into an archaeological space displaying the very oldest toys, an ethnographic space devoted to toys of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and a third space presenting today's toys. The collection is made up of both originals and replicas. Particular attention is paid to the replicas, because they make it possible to realise the museum's main idea – touch, pick up, discover. The Toy Museum is Lithuania's first family-oriented educational centre devoted to toys and the heritage of play. The Toy Museum's exhibition area is 150 sq m. More than 18,000 visitors come here every year. The museum has three themed exhibitions: "The Oldest Toys of Lithuania", "A Journey to the Stone Age" and "Memories of the 20th Century". The public institution "Žaislų muziejus" (Toy Museum) was founded on 8 March 2010 through the efforts of archaeologist Povilas Blaževičius and his wife Indrė Jovaišaitė-Blaževičienė. The initiative was launched by Blaževičius's doctoral thesis "Toys and Games in Lithuania in the 13th–17th Centuries on the Basis of Archaeological Data". With the approval of Vilnius City Council, the museum opened its doors to the public on 7 December 2012. The building housing the museum was built around the end of the 17th century; in the 18th century the residential and farm buildings and brewery of Canon Antonowicz already stood here. In 1785 they were bought by Canon Rodkiewicz, and the building belonged to his relatives for about 150 years.
