Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (KGB Museum)

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (KGB Museum) is the only museum of its kind in the Baltic states. It was set up in the very building where the Soviet repressive institutions (the NKVD and NKGB-MGB-KGB) worked from 1940 to 1991. On the museum's first floor, in the former office of the deputy head of the MGB (KGB) inner prison, you can see documents, photographs, maps and other items telling the story of the Sovietisation of the country in 1940–1941. The exhibition on the partisan war of 1944–1953 introduces the territorial structure and military organisation of the partisan units, the aims of the freedom fighters, and their daily activities and life. The NKVD-NKGB's fight against the armed resistance is revealed in the exhibition "An Unequal Fight". On the second floor, visitors can see exhibitions on the imprisonment of Lithuanian residents in the Gulag in 1944–1956, the deportations of 1944–1953 and KGB activities in 1954–1991. Here visitors will also find a reconstructed telephone-tapping room, displaying surviving eavesdropping equipment and furniture, with some interior details recreated. The Museum of Genocide Victims was founded in 1992. It is the only museum of its kind in the Baltic states, set up in the very building where the Soviet repressive institutions, the NKVD and NKGB-MGB-KGB, worked from the second half of 1940 until August 1991. The building's semi-basement still holds the inner prison and pre-trial detention facility, where Lithuanian residents who displeased the occupying authorities were held from the autumn of 1940 until 1987. Visitors can also see the exhibition set up in the former execution room.
