In the old days Medininkai truly flourished. In the 14th century it was not only one of the largest towns in Lithuania but also a defensive centre, and that is when the brick defensive castle was built. It had 4 towers, 15-metre-high walls and defensive moats. To this day it is the castle with the largest area in Lithuania, Poland and Belarus. Today visitors are greeted by the surviving walls and the rebuilt main tower, the donjon. Knights regularly train in the castle courtyard, and during various events you can watch medieval dances and fights or join in pottery making and kiln firing, archery and other medieval activities.
