Liudvika and Stanislovas Didžiulis Homestead Museum

Not rated yetGriežionėlės

A memorial museum opened in 1968 at the homestead where, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the bibliographer, folklore collector and bibliophile Stanislovas Didžiulis (1856–1927) lived with his wife Liudvika Didžiulienė-Žmona (1856–1925), the first Lithuanian woman prose writer. The exhibition in the house tells of the period of the press ban, the heroic deeds of the book smugglers, and the awakeners and educators of the nation. The exhibition reflects the lives and work of Liudvika and Stanislovas Didžiulis and their children: the writer and doctor Vanda Didžiulytė-Albrechtienė, the children's writer Aldona Didžiulytė-Kazanavičienė, the doctor Antanas Didžiulis, the translator Ona Didžiulytė-Sketerienė, the teacher Vytautas Didžiulis, the doctor Michalina Didžiulytė-Ševeliovienė and others. The exhibition's epigraph is Didžiulienė's words: "I rejoice when I can wipe away the tears of even one person! It is not much, it is like a drop in the sea… But if each of us wiped away the tears of at least one poor soul, life would already be much easier…". The displays hold photographs of the family and their relatives, copies of the writer's manuscripts, letters, books, the banned press distributed by members of this large family ("Aušra", "Varpas"), and surviving household and personal items (dishes, needlework, Didžiulienė's dress). In the next room is the Didžiulis family furniture: a piano, a chest, a bed, a small table, a mirror and paintings. During the press ban the homestead was a centre for distributing the press. In the entrance hall stands the old wardrobe that hid from the gendarmes the entrance to a cavity in the wall, where the banned Lithuanian press brought by the book smugglers J. Šaučiūnas, J. Beliakas, K. Ūdra and others was kept. The Didžiulis family also had a large library, used by J. Jablonskis, J. Basanavičius, M. Biržiška and M. Davainis-Silvestravičius. Stanislovas and Liudvika Didžiulis are buried not far from the homestead, in the old cemetery on Padvarninkai hill, consecrated by Canon Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas.
