Legend-shrouded Lake Alaušas, a real beauty, is the pride of the Utena region and the tenth-largest lake in the country (1,071.8 ha). According to one legend, Duke Alaušas's castle stood on Maneičiai Hill Fort on the eastern shore of the lake. The story goes that the duke loved the large, clear lake so much that, as he was dying, he asked for his ashes to be scattered on its waters. The people did just that, and named the lake Alaušas in the duke's honour. On a long, narrow peninsula jutting into the lake from the west stand the buildings of Bikuškis Manor, which recall the days when the Radziwiłłs and Ogińskis ruled here. On the southern shore of the lake lies the small town of Sudeikiai, which warmly welcomes everyone looking for a breather in nature. Whatever the season, the shore of Lake Alaušas is always a good place to recharge your batteries and rest. The lake attracts visitors with its eye-catching landscape, clean water full of fish and well-kept bathing areas. The wide, sandy beach appeals not only to adults but also to children – the lake deepens slowly as you wade in, so it is a great place for quiet, safe holidays for those coming with children. Gazing out over the expanse of water lets you appreciate the beauty around you. You can admire the lake and the islands that adorn it from a rowing boat, a pedal boat or a raft. The wonderful nature invites holidaymakers to take a break from everyday worries not only in summer: in winter, too, it is a great place to enjoy peace and quiet or the pleasures of the ice rink. Those wishing to get to know Aukštaitija are advised to start their trip in Sudeikiai and stop at Lake Alaušas. The lakeshore has a campsite, rural tourism homesteads, a diving centre, landscaped grounds and children's playgrounds, while outdoor exercise equipment lets travellers improve their well-being and fitness. In summer Alaušas becomes a real magnet in Aukštaitija – not only because of its excellent water quality but also because of the activities on offer – and in winter it is a paradise for anglers and skaters. And only here can you taste Lake Alaušas fish soup or Aukštaitija-style pancakes with a creamy dip!
