What makes the strongest impression is that Lake Dauniškis, which gave the park its name, lies right in the town centre, nestled cosily among houses and lanes, next to a pine forest and the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Martyrs. In 2011, as Utena celebrated its 750th anniversary, Lake Dauniškis was adorned with an illuminated musical fountain. The park and the fountain are like two brothers of the lake, bringing together Utena residents and visitors from other Lithuanian towns and abroad to enjoy a light and music show on the water. All summer long, in the evenings, the “singing and dancing” fountain draws spectators into a real carousel of colours, emotions and lights. Onlookers gather on the bridge and next to the fountain, or watch the show from the other side of the lake, settled in a boat or sitting on the chapel steps. Jets of water rise in time to modern and classical music, and it feels as if Lake Dauniškis becomes a magnet where what matters most is a good mood and connecting with the people around you. Young and old alike, as well as families with small children, love the park for the chance to breathe the clean air of the pine forest and walk without noise and the constant hum of cars. Young residents and visitors can play on the lakeshore, where there are modern climbing frames that develop motor skills, swings and equipment suitable for children to exercise on. The facilities are really convenient – there is a car park nearby and a cosy café that is open all year round. When the summer bustle dies down, the fountain is switched off until spring, but Dauniškis Park does not lose its charm in winter either. Did you know you can walk or run all the way round Lake Dauniškis? There is a comfortable wooden boardwalk around it, used every morning by runners and by walkers undeterred by rain or cold.
